Monthly Club Handicap
The Club Handicap takes place at 7.30pm on the last Tuesday of every month and costs £1 to enter.
The distance is 4 miles. The route starts at the back of the Clubhouse on Redgauntlet Road, proceeds up East and West King Street as far as Cairndhu Avenue, down Cairndhu Avenue and turn left onto West Clyde Street. Proceed down West and East Clyde Street as far as Henry Bell Street and back onto East Clyde Street. Turn right onto East Clyde Street and proceed back to the start/finish point on Redgautlet Road.
The monthly club handicap is a good way for athletes to test their current level of fitness, gauge the progress of their training and get used to competitive race conditions.
View a MAP of the course.
Runners are given a predicted run time and this is added to a handicap time to give a total of 40 minutes. Runners set off at intervals according to their handicap time with slower runners going first. For example if the predicted time for a runner is 33 minutes they set off at their handicap time of 7 minutes.
The first runner home wins the prized ‘handicap winners t-shirt’ and the male and female with the fastest times also win a prize.
A runner new to the handicap cannot win on their first attempt as their predicted run time and hence their handicap will be inaccurate. This will be calculated for subsequent races. The handicap time is also used to calculate results in the Club Road Race Championship.
Twice yearly (normally in July and September) the normal handicap is replaced with a Hare and Tortoise Race where fast and slow runners are paired up.
In order for the Monthly Handicap to run successfully, a couple of volunteers are required each month to take entries, time the event, calculate results and hand out the prizes. Don’t worry if you haven’t volunteered before as instruction can be given by other members who have. Please see the Volunteer Notice in the Clubhouse.
