Hi folks

A few of us talked bravely about doing the Tough Guy Challenge this winter, but heroically missed the deadline. To avoid a similar disaster this year my brother suggests that we register nice and early (say this March, ready for Jan 2011). Then we can look forward to the fun all year.

For those not familiar with this fine institution see www.toughguy.co.uk for details. It is outstandingly good fun, and fills up very quickly.

Anyone keen to partake please let me know and we’ll make it happen.

We have been approached by 6 members of the HAC Military Band who are coming up to Helensburgh to do a concert in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and are keen to join us for a run to see some local sights.

I have been in contact with them & arranged that we would go out on Wednesday 28th July for a run down Loch Lomondside. Planning to meet at the gates of Loch Lomond Golf club at 6.30pm & then to car share up to Tarbet to start the run at approx 7pm. Running back to the cars at the Golf Club gates is approx 12miles.

For a shorter run people could arrange to meet at Luss Car Park at 6.30pm & again car share to meet the rest of us at Tarbet Car park to start the run (this is approx 8 miles).

I am hoping that as many of the club members as possible would be able to come along as the greater the mix of runners the better as the Army runners are all of different standards & speeds! (or so I have been told!)

We may go to the Commodore after the run for a drink & maybe a bite to eat so bring some money if you want to come along to the pub!

Please note that as the Helensburgh Half Marathon falls on the Sunday date that we would normally hold the monthly Club Run there will be NO other club run this month other than this run on Wednesday 28th.

The 3rd Club run will take place on Sunday 4th July. We are planning to do the “wee Fruin”. Meeting at the Hill House Car Park at 9.15am aiming to start the run at 9.30am.

The Route is across to Sinclair Street along the path through the wood, up Sinclair Street to the roundabout at Cross Keys. Turning left into Glen Fruin. Following the road, then turning left at the bridge & back out of the Glen (just before the dump). Back down Sinclair Street & then along the path to Hill House.

This is about 9 miles. The route can be shortened by taking the farm track (The Pot Belly Pig Route!) off Sinclair Street between The Dump & Cross Keys & it then rejoins the route before the Bridge in the Fruin. Which I think is about 6 miles.

Hope you can make it along & include the monthly Club Run into your Sunday run programme…

Handicap 1.30pm – BBQ 3pm

We are holding this year’s summer Hare & Tortoise on Saturday 26th & thought it would be nice to have a BBQ afterwards. Operating on a Bring what you want drink basis. If everyone can bring £5 to cover the cost of the food we will get burgers etc.

Teams will be worked out in advance as far as possible going on existing handicap times, matching a faster runner (the Hare) with a slower runner (the Tortoise) so that everyone can take part.

The Hare will run 2 x 2miles & the Tortoise 2 x 1mile

Please put your name onto the list at the clubhouse if you are taking part.

Friends & Family are more than welcome to come along to cheer on the runners & enjoy the BBQ afterwards (please indicate numbers on the attached sheet so we have an idea for buying food etc)

We have introduced a monthly club run. These will take place each month on the 1st Sunday after the monthly handicap at 9.30am and will be open to everyone at the club to take part in (if you can make it).

The 2nd Club run will take place on Sunday 30th May. We are planning to do a route starting from Arden Roundabout & running through both the Carrick & Loch Lomond Golf courses. I have been told that this is about 8 miles.

As there is limited parking in the lay by at the Arden Roundabout could we arrange to meet at the club house at 9.15am then we can share cars to get to the start. Aiming to start the run at 9.30am.

Bring some money with you & we could pop into Luss for a coffee afterwards…

We have decided to introduce a monthly club run (along the same idea as David Spy’s Big Run). These will take place each month on the 1st Sunday after the monthly handicap at 9.30am and will be open to everyone at the club to take part in (if you can make it).

The aim of the run is to make it a social event getting everyone out starting & hopefully finishing together (although the distances that individuals run may vary) & depending where we are maybe going for a coffee & cake afterwards.

The start points & routes will be published on the club website (check the Calendar and the Training Run posts) & on the notice board at the club house in the month before the run – so if you have any ideas for routes please let Gail Thomas know.

The 1st run will take place on Sunday 2nd May & we are planning on running Liz Bowdens run around Helensburgh. (details TBA).

Hope you can make it along & include the monthly Club Run into your Sunday run programme…

EXTRACT FROM ARTICLE ON SCOTTISH MASTERS ATHLETICS WEBSITE:

What has prompted this article is the apparent confusion among members and potential members of the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club over the age at which athletes are eligible to take part in Veterans / Masters competition.

In August 2009, the IAAF took something which was simple, straightforward and well understood by everyone, and confused it totally. The situation we have now is that under IAAF, and consequently SAL, rules athletes are eligible to compete in Masters / Veterans events when they reach the age of 35, but only if it is a Track and Field competition. If you wish to compete in a Masters Road or Cross Country event then you must wait until you turn 40. This has caused untold confusion among athletes of both sexes who have recently turned 35 and have perhaps been competing as Vets and who now think they will have to wait until they become 40 to resume vets competition. In order to clarify things, the only events where this is true are National Masters Road and Cross Country Championships held by SAL.

The Scottish Veteran Harriers Club, in common with British Masters, European Veterans and the World Masters Association are adhering to the status quo with regard to age groups. In other words membership of the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club and all events promoted by the SVHC, which includes the LSK Supplies Road Relays, and the Run and Become Series, will continue to be open to all men and women over the age of 35. The same age group structure is true of the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International, the British Masters Road and Cross Country Championships and all European and World Masters Championships.
